FRoST Wins First Place at FHNW Rover Träff 2025

FRoST Takes First Place at FHNW Rover Träff 2025

Windisch, Switzerland – May 11, 2025. The Frankfurt Robotics Science Team (FRoST) from Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences has won first place at the FHNW Rover Träff 2025 competition, held from May 9 to 11, 2025, at the FHNW campus in Windisch, Switzerland.

Competing with their flagship rover ARES, the team delivered strong performances across all competition tasks, ultimately securing the top position against an international field of university rover teams.

FRoST celebrating their performance

The Competition

FHNW Rover Träff is a rover challenge organised by the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz, bringing together student teams to test their rovers in a series of tasks that simulate planetary exploration scenarios. The 2025 edition marked the event’s inaugural year, and FRoST was among the teams invited to compete.

Performance

Over the course of the event, ARES demonstrated the reliability and capability that the team has built through years of iterative development and competition experience. Tasks ranged from autonomous navigation and terrain traversal to manipulation and science operations, all areas where FRoST has steadily improved since its first European Rover Challenge appearance in 2019.

A Milestone for the Team

The victory at Rover Träff 2025 is FRoST’s first international first-place finish. After placing 7th at ERC 2022, 5th at ERC 2023, and continuing to compete at ERC 2024, the win is the clearest result yet of that steady progress.

Looking Ahead

With this victory, FRoST enters the next phase of its development with momentum. The team continues work on EROS, the next-generation rover platform, and DAEDALUS, an autonomous drone designed to complement ground-based operations. Both platforms are expected to expand the team’s capabilities for future competitions.

FRoST is a student-run robotics team based at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, competing internationally in Mars rover analogue challenges since 2019.
